Lesson 31

Students filled out their yearbook surveys, before reading their personal novels.

We did a very quick quotation mark worksheet - no quiz.

Much of the morning was disrupted by gr.9 immunizations, so we scaled back today's discussions of "Penny in the Dust."

Students looked at the metaphors  in the second paragraph on pg 136, and the larger paragraph on 137. We also discussed the information the reader is able to glean from the opening paragraph of the work.

HMWRK:

  • Write notes (or continue them) about the core misunderstanding of the story, and how it relates to the closing paragraph.
  • Discuss what the symbol of the penny represents to the father when he first offers it - to Peter when he first receives it - to the father when he puts it back in his pocket after finding it - and to Peter at the end of the story.
