Lesson 29

Students read their personal novels, before moving back into the working groups they were assigned to during our last class.

Groups worked together to complete the previously assigned questions, and handed them in at the end of the block.

There is no new homework - students should begin reviewing all short story terms.

Lesson 28

After handing in their homework, students did a quick apostrophe quiz.

They then read their personal novels.

Students moved into temporary groups, and we talked about POV, character types, and a few other story terms - after thing broader discussion, students set about answering  a series of questions in those groups.

There is no new homework - we will continue the group work next class.

Anyone who is finding it challenging to grasp the terms we are using should be looking over short story packages/reviewing as needed. Come to tutorial if you'd like  to talk through  a specific term in greater depth!

Lesson 27

Students came in, chatted a bit about where we are headed, and got a reminder about the quizzlet on apostrophes next class.

After a bit of stretching - and with a quick stretch break in the middle - we finished reading "The Sea Devil."

Students are to create brief notes - not paragraphs - no complete sentences are even required - in relation to the following:

  • On a piece of your own paper - draw a plot diagram, and plot out the story on it
  • Write down a series of words to describe the setting/atmosphere of the story - note a quotation or two (with page numbers) related to the atmosphere
  • What point of view is the story written from? - How do you know? (maybe note a quote for proof?)
  •  What kind of character is the protagonist? ( flat, round, static, dynamic..)
  • **Note 2-3 symbols in the story, and write brief notes about what they represent, and what their purpose is in the story

Again, these notes are brief - meant to prepare students for group discussions and ongoing work - There's  nothing for building confidence, like coming to class prepared!

Lesson 26

Students came in, handed in their homework (if they had it done), and read their personal novels.

We did a worksheet on commas, which will be followed by a comma quizzlet on Wednesday, next week.

Students talked with group-mates about superstitions - what they are - why some are - and ones they have come across so far in their lives.

We then read the first two pages of "The Sea Devil," up to the bottom of page 35. Students high lighted/underlined any lines that suggested potentially dangerous, or negative things to come (foreshadowing).

NO HOMEWORK!

Lesson 25

We finally got to relax a bit, after working so hard on paragraph writing.

Students read their personal novels for a bit - reconnected with the characters they'd been missing over the last weeks...

We did a short worksheet on apostrophes, which, as always, can be found in the file on Teams.

Students worked on vocabulary, the rest of which is homework - Just as before, on a separate sheet of paper, students are to write a definition for the words, then illustrate the meaning by using them in a sentence.

Lesson 23

Students spent today's working on their good copies The final copy will be complete by the end of Monday's block.

***IF STUDENTS BELIEVE THEY WILL REQUIRE MORE TIME THAN TWO FULL BLOCKS TO COMPLETE A GOOD COPY,  THEY MUST  COME TO TUTORIAL BEFORE THE FINAL WRITING CLASS.  After two blocks of time for the final drafts, the work will be marked as it is.

Lesson 22

Students worked through a peer-editing process today - most of those who were present received a full edit, along with a secondary read of their work.

Next block, students will begin their final draft - The final copy should be complete by the end of the subsequent block.

Lesson 21

Students spent the entirety of  today's block  finishing their rough drafts.

Anyone who has not completed their rough draft is expected to attend tutorial on Tuesday morning, prior to peer-edit work.

Students who wish to work on their writing in LAC can do so, but it will be treated as a test.

PLEASE NOTE: As stated repeatedly during class time, ALL WRITING WILL TAKE PLACE IN THE CLASSROOM SETTING. No extraneous materials will be used, apart from what I have now collected, and the text of the story itself.

Lesson 20

Students marked their recent comma quiz, and spent the remainder of the block working on their drafts.

***The homework for today was to write down 2-3 points for improvement from the last assignment - if you did not do so, it should be brought in next class, and stapled to the back of your draft work.

Lesson 58

Today, students did an in-class writing assignment - This puts us in a good position for next week's conferences, and is a great way t...
